This is one of the questions I get asked most often, and the honest answer might surprise you. The best time to book a newborn photoshoot is whenever you, the mum, feel ready to have a photographer in your home. There no rule that your baby has to be a certain number of days old (at least in my world).
Newborn photoshoots with me are led by you, not the calendar
The newborn photoshoots I offer are relaxed, in-home sessions. They are about documenting how your family is changing, in your own space, exactly as you are. Your baby does not need to be super tiny. Your house does not need to be
perfect. You do not need to feel “back to normal”.
Some mums feel great quite soon after giving birth and are happy to do a photoshoot early on. Others need more time to settle, recover, and find their rhythm before inviting someone in. Both are completely valid. This is your experience, and your choice always comes first.
Do I need to book my newborn photoshoot before the baby is born?
Yes, ideally. The best way to work with me is to get in touch while you are still pregnant. We then pencil your newborn photoshoot on your due date. Babies rarely arrive exactly on time, so nothing is fixed at this stage. Once your baby is born, you simply message me and we find a date that feels right for you. I keep space in my calendar specifically for newborn sessions, so I can be flexible and work around your recovery, your baby, and your family life.
Does my baby need to be under two weeks old?
Some families choose to do their photoshoot very early, when their baby is still brand new. Those sessions capture the tiny details that change so quickly, wrinkly skin, floppy limbs, that just-born feeling. Others prefer to wait a little longer, when their baby is more alert, starting to make eye contact, stretch, and show early expressions that already feel like “them”. Both options are beautiful. It really comes down to what feels right for you.
What does an in-home newborn photoshoot look like?
A newborn photoshoot in your home usually lasts around one and a half to two hours, at a very slow, gentle pace. Everything is baby-led; We pause for feeds, nappy changes, sooth, cuddle and breaks for mum and dad, if needed. Nothing is rushed, and nothing is forced. These moments are part of your story and they belong in your photos. Siblings are very welcome too. Toddlers can come and go, play on the floor, cuddle when they feel like it, and be exactly who they are.
