Need ideas to keep older kids engaged during a fam Need ideas to keep older kids engaged during a family photoshoot?

Here are 3 games I use all the time to create natural laughter, movement and genuine interactions (and yes, they work brilliantly with younger kids too!).

No awkward posing.
Just play.

Also, don’t mind me shouting in polish here ;) I’m a multilingual gal 🤪

Which one would your family enjoy most? 👇

Game 1: Blanket Run 🏃‍♀️

Mum and Dad hold a blanket (or a bedsheet) between them.

The kids run underneath while the parents try to “catch” them by dropping the blanket.

Simple? Yes.
Hilarious? Also yes.

The running, anticipation and laughter create the most natural smiles—and loads of opportunities for great action shots.

Game 2: Zombie Walk 🧟

Mum stands in the middle holding a flower (or any prop).

Everyone else walks around her while she tries to “catch” them.

The catch?
Everyone has to move in a different silly way.

Zombie walk.
Ballerina walk.
Penguin walk.
Ninja walk.
Hop like a bunny…

It gets sillier every round—and that’s exactly when the best expressions happen.

Game 3: Shadow Theatre 🎭

Mum and Dad hold a white bedsheet nice and tight to create a frame.

The sun should be behind the sheet, so the light shines through it and creates beautiful silhouettes.

Then everyone takes turns stepping behind the sheet to dance, jump, hug, make funny poses or simply be silly together. (Yes, Mum and Dad can join in too!)

It’s such a simple setup, but the results look completely different from your typical family photos—and kids absolutely love seeing their giant shadows come to life.
Run around and get silly - yes please!!! The more Run around and get silly - yes please!!!

The more chaos, the better. 🤘

There isn’t much I won’t do for a great photo. If There isn’t much I won’t do for a great photo.

If getting a fun angle means climbing the monkey bars while carrying a camera worth more than my first car… I’ll do it. 😅

Not because I’m trying to be dramatic, but because perspective changes everything. Different angles make your gallery feel fun, dynamic and full of life, especially when your photoshoot is gloriously chaotic.

If you’re looking for a photographer who’s just as committed to getting the best shots as your kids are to causing absolute chaos… welcome. 😉 Follow along.

Pro tip for a happier life, especially if you’re a Pro tip for a happier life, especially if you’re a photographer: surround yourself with people who never roll their eyes when you turn up with another camera or lens to play with. 😉

My little Polish tribe in London has never once questioned it. They simply let me create.

They’re women who care, who listen, who accept every version of me, and who bring their own stories, perspectives and wisdom into our shared conversations.

This weekend it was just a few of the usual crew, but as always, it felt like a safe place to land, slow down and recharge.

I couldn’t resist bringing my vintage Helios 44-2 along this time.

It’s a fully manual lens that creates the dreamiest, softest images. Definitely not my first choice for the beautiful chaos of a family photoshoot, where tiny humans have absolutely no intention of staying still. But it’s the perfect reminder to slow down, be intentional and really see each frame before pressing the shutter.

Now I’m slightly obsessed with the idea of using it for dreamy maternity portraits…
